Newport Historical Society

Corbin Bridge Image: The Newport Historical Society is an active, vibrant member of the Newport community. First established in 1928, its original mission to preserve and disseminate Newport history was expanded to "discover, collect and organize any material which relates to the area or illustrates the history... of the area" in addition to collecting, preserving and disseminating historical information. Dues are presently $10 per year. The Historical Society has a large amount of artifacts collected over the years and housed in its museum on the second floor of the Harry V. Spanos District Court Building, Court House Square, Newport. The Society meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 7pm in the Community Room at the Sugar River Savings Bank. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Most recently, the Historical Society was the driving force behind the town's decision to rebuild and replicate the Corbin Covered Bridge, built circa 1835 and destroyed by arson in 1993. It was rebuilt (fully replicated) in 1994 by nationally known covered bridge builder and master craftsman Arnold Graton & Associates of Ashland, New Hampshire. Since the return of the bridge over the Sugar River in October of 1994, an event witnessed by thousands, the Newport Historical Society has sponsored an annual covered bridge festival in September of each year, celebrating the return of the Corbin Covered Bridge and highlighting the craftsmanship of the 1800's.
